3:41 am - 2 months!
Wow, time sure flies when you're parenting! I can't believe that Gabe is over 2 months old now. He's up to 23" long and weighs 12lbs 6oz. Still some motor skills that aren't quite where he should be for his age (as per his developmental peds appt at the end of Sept), but he'll be starting PT 2x/month under NY's early intervention program to address that. Otherwise he's a cute little babbling baby who is doing wonderfully :)

One of these days I'll have new pics uploaded too...

7:29 pm - Gabe is HOME!
Last week we didn't know if he'd ever leave the hospital.

This afternoon he came home.

Thanks to all for your prayers and support :)

8:52 pm - Gabe is doing great!
After the doom and gloom of his first couple days of life, I'm happy to report that we're now looking at bringing our son home soon :) There are a couple of things that we need to watch before that can happen, plus his neurological development will be followed closely after discharge, but otherwise we couldn't be more happy with his progress.

10:34 am - Gabriel updates
Hi all, Sara again, thank you for thoughts and prayers. We have a long road ahead. I took an early discharge from St. Mary's last night (when I would have otherwise left Fri or more likely Sat with a c-section) so I could see Gabe in the NICU. His EEG yesterday wasn't good, showed pretty much all seizure activity instead of normal brain waves. However his heart is okay, lungs okay, kidneys okay (he started to pee). But still worry over liver damage, and we don't know what the long term neurological complications will be. Today they want to take him off the ventilator to see how he does breathing on his own, and we'll also speak with the neurologist. Our families are coming in from out of town to visit. We continue to hope and pray that he'll improve, but the long term prognosis is still unknown. Worst case scenario, we may need to make the decision to take him off the machines. It's a choice no parent should have to face.

After miscarrying twins last summer (just over 1 year ago exactly), it's a hard, hard blow to get through an otherwise healthy pregnancy only to discover your baby may have had a cord compression in utero :(

1:55 pm - It's a Boy
at 12:37PM EST, after a way-to-long labor (and unfortunate C-section), Baby Gabriel was born into this world. We have no details about weight, and no pictures to post yet. Gabriel suffered some respiratory problems at birth, and was intubated. He is now breathing on his own, but has been transfered to the NICU at Albany Medical Hospital. Sara is recovering from the C-section and is understandably upset about the birth. It looks like Gabe is out of immediate danger, but poor Sara has not yet been able to see him, as he was spirited away immediately at birth. Neither Sara nor Gabe is any condition to travel to the other, so their meeting is to be delayed. I, however, will be going down to see Gabe later on today, to get pictures, and to get first hand news to report to Sara. She has suffered terribly with this whole pregnancy, a fact which she has tried to hide from me, but as the doctors take great pains to point out, very little Sara could have done or not done would have affected this outcome. She has worried at every turn that the baby would be sick, or otherwise not be born normal, and it turns out she was right to within a small measure. According to the doctors, Gabe will almost definitely be fine, the only real danger now is the pneumonia that will likely result from the maconium in his lungs. The doctors stop short of saying it, but the reality is that anything other than a full recovery and normal life are quite unlikely at this point. His stay in the NICU at Albany Med should last only a day or so and is purely precautionary, in the event of complications from the birth. Sara's recovery is likely to be longer and more complicated, especially emotionally.

We will post more as we can,

-=Eric Schumann

6:49 am - In Jerusalem
Had lots of delays during my travel last Tues and Wed, but got into J-lem by 6am Thurs. Promptly slept for a bit :D

It's supposedly going to snow here starting tonight, worse than the storm a couple weeks ago (with 8+ inches). So we'll see. Hoping to go to the Kotel (Western Wall) this morning in remembrance of my original due date tomorrow.

Sleep schedule is still all messed up. Had a very nice Shabbat, however :)

12:35 pm - updates
sweetjezebel poked me to come around more, so here I am. ;)

Teaching a summer class at UAlbany (Victims of Crime), which goes for 2 more weeks. Must get the Tuesday lecture done today!

I've been writing a couple book chapters, one based on the third part of my RIT MS thesis and one that was an independent study report from RIT. Need to do some minor tweaks on both, but otherwise they shaped up rather nicely.

I'm doing a summer musical with the Family Players of NENY. We're doing Honk: The Ugly Duckling Musical. It's super cute :) Show runs July 13-15 and July 20-22.

10:27 am - life, snow, Rochester
Life is good but busy. We're buying a house in Albany (Guilderland). I don't think I like it, but we'll see if it gets any better after seeing it during the daytime next week.

Snow sucks. I hate winter. Fortunately we've only been dumped on the once (Valentine's Day) in Albany, so it could be worse (i.e., Rochester or Syracuse). However Albany doesn't know how to plow, which is very annoying.

In Rochester until Friday over my winter break. I'm at RIT all day Thursday but otherwise free around doing homework. Anyone here that wants to do something? Is there a Wed night food and beer outing this week?

current mood: okay

Dear Santa Hanukkah Harry...

Dear Santa Hanukkah Harry,

This year I've been busy!

Last month I set retrev's puppy on fire (-66 points). In July I gave wickidpisa a life-saving blood transfusion (50 points). In January I committed genocide... Sorry about that, petef (-5000 points). Last Sunday I put money in strandofpurls's expired parking meter (14 points). In October on a flight to LA, I stole the emergency flight information card (-40 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-5042 points). For Christmas Hanukkah I deserve a spanking!

Write your letter to Santa Hanukkah Harry! Enter your LJ username:

Well damn. Hanukkah Harry does know all! Guess I better return that flight info card to Southwest...

12:02 am - 1st day of school
Well, okay, it's after midnight, so my first day was really yesterday. But close enough.

Classes Tuesday (Intro to Political Violence: Terrorism and Insurgency) and Thursday (Responsible Use of Criminal Justice Information and Research Design II). Teaching Monday/Wednesday/Friday (Intro to Criminology, grading/attendance for the lecture and leading 2 Fri discussion sections). Also singing in the University Chorale again. Should be fun.

Umm other than that nothing going on. I am boring. :)
